Introduction
The holiday season is a time to eat out and enjoy our favorite casual dining spots. During December 2022, many states saw an uptick in foot traffic to casual dining venues. This was especially true for states like Colorado, New Mexico, and Vermont which experienced a 91%, 90%, and 88% increase respectively in visitation compared to past years’ records.
Minnesota also saw a notable increase in visitors to casual restaurants during this period with a rise of 85%. Illinois experienced similar results with an 83% rise in foot traffic over the same span. Alaska’s 77% increase was one of the highest seen during this period, while Michigan reported a 75% bump in visits to casual eateries.
The District of Columbia saw foot traffic to its casual diners increase by 67% over the two years while New Hampshire and Oregon both reported a 66% boost in visits. Kentucky recorded an impressive 64% change while Rhode Island notched 61%. California and Washington were not far behind with 60% and 59%, respectively.
Overall, these numbers indicate that Americans are eager to visit their local establishments, even amidst economic hardship or pandemics.
