Introduction
A median is what separates the higher half of a list of numbers from the lower half, in the same way that a median divider on the expressway separates traffic traveling in opposite directions. The median is distinct from the mean because whereas the median indicates the middle number in a set, the mean defines the most frequent number in a set of numbers. The mean and median can be the same, however.
A median household is found by lining up all household incomes within a particular state and then locating the income that is directly in the center of that range. The income of a household is determined by adding up all earned income from every employed person living in the same house. So for instance, if two parents lived with their three children and all five of them earned income from their job, the total household income would account for the sum of all of their incomes combined.
Median household income is different from median individual income and is often greater than individual income, as household income is the sum of many people’s incomes, while the individual income is the sum of only one person’s income.
