Introduction
A new study has found that there have been dramatic changes in foot traffic to grocery stores across the US over the past 2 years. Montana has seen the highest increase with a 15% change since December 2019, while New Mexico has seen the worst drop with a -13% change.
Other states that have seen significant increases are Wyoming (13%), Hawaii (8%), North Dakota (8%), North Carolina (7%), Alaska (6%), Texas (6%), Maine (6%) and Washington, Wisconsin, Idaho, Oklahoma and Alabama all seeing a 5% increase. Utah and Virginia saw a 4% increase as did California, Delaware and Oregon. New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Missouri and South Carolina all saw a 3% rise while Vermont and Louisiana both saw a 2% increase. Maryland and Illinois were only marginally up by 1%.
Rhode Island, Kansas, Arizona, Georgia, Ohio and Arkansas saw no change since December 4th, 2022. Similarly, Colorado had an even split of 0%, as did Nevada and Indiana along with Michigan. Massachusetts had a slight decrease of -1%, Connecticut -2%, Iowa -3%, and South Dakota, Kentucky Mississippi and West Virginia all at -3%. Minnesota and Nebraska also had decreases of -4%.
Overall there have been considerable changes in foot traffic to grocery stores across the US in December 2022. These changes demonstrate the varying impact Covid-19 has had on different states as well as how people are adjusting their shopping habits post-pandemic.
