Introduction

The median age of people in each of the states tells us that 50% of the population of that state is younger than that number, and 50% is older than that number. The lowest the median is, the youngest the population will be. In the United States, the median age within each state ranges from 31.1 years old – 43 years old.

It has often been said that young people drive innovation, so a prevalence of young people marked by a lower median age in a state might be a marker for that area’s present and future growth. Young people have families, for instance, in contrast to older people who have already had families of their own.

As time progresses, it is likely that the median age of all of the states will continue to increase in the coming years, as less and less people are having children, and those who do tend to have them later than previous generations did. What that means, practically, is that as time goes by, U.S. demographics will gradually change to an increasingly older average population.
