Introduction

The United States is a highly diverse nation with varying levels of religiosity among its population. In particular, there are a number of states that have been identified as having the least religious citizens in the country. These states tend to have higher percentages of residents who identify as either atheists or agnostics and lower percentages who consider themselves religious or highly religious. Amongst the least religious states include Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, and Alaska – all ranking in the top ten for being the least religious places in America. This is likely due to an emphasis on secularism in these areas, as well as a greater focus on individual liberty and freedom of expression. One possible explanation may also be attributed to the more progressive worldviews found in these states – leading many to reject traditional beliefs and embrace alternative spiritualities. Additionally, these areas tend to have higher education rates than other regions of the country – which could potentially be contributing factors to their lower levels of religiosity.
