Introduction

The birth rate of a country or a state is the measure of how many live births occur within a population, using a sample size of 1000 people. The birth rate is a figure used to determine the health and growth of a population, and when taken in comparison with infant mortality and aging population figures, one can determine the projected future of the population and the country as a whole. Birth rates are therefore a crucial statistic in the crafting of a population pyramid, which is used to illustrate the changes and composition of a country or state’s population.

Birth rates in the U.S. vary on a state-by-state basis, influenced by many of the same factors that affect other related statistics; access to health care, standard of living, and access to education. However, when it comes to birth rates the effect of these is inverted. A lower standard of living and lower education results in higher birth rates, whereas access to higher education and a higher standard of living decrease birth rates.
