Introduction
The American Psychological Association defines transgender persons as individuals whose gender identity, behavior, or identity do not correspond with their sex assigned at birth. Statistics on the number of transgender individuals may vary greatly due to differing definitions of the word, social stigmas, or political legislation.
Yet, the School of Law of the University of California, Los Angeles estimated that there are 1.6 million Americans over 13 years old who identify as transgender in the country, which accounts for 0.6% of the population over 13. Of that, 18% of people who identify as transgender are aged 13–17, effectively doubling since previous estimates. The number of transgender individuals may greatly differ from state to state, depending on socioeconomic, cultural, and political factors.
Learn for yourself how the transgender population differs by state by looking at the data in the charts.
