Introduction
The Amish population in the US is highly varied between states. In Pennsylvania, which has the highest population of Amish people, over 89,000 are reported to reside in the state. Ohio follows close behind with an Amish population of over 81,000. Indiana also has a sizable Amish population of about 62,800. While many of these populations have experienced steady growth since 2008, those in Arkansas and South Dakota have declined. The Amish lifestyle varies from state to state in terms of traditions and customs observed; for example, the groups living in Wisconsin tend to be more conservative than those found elsewhere in America. Despite this wide range of variation between states, many commonalities are shared across the entire US that unite all Amish Americans: a commitment to living frugally without modern technology or electricity as well as strong religious beliefs centered on traditional Christian values such as humility and hard work.
