Amish Population by State

The Amish are a community of people who follow a Christian subculture, which has its origins in the 16th-century Protestant Reformation. They follow strict rules regarding the usage of modern electronic technology, and they use horse-and-buggies for transportation rather than motorized vehicles. They are sometimes referred to as the “Old Order Amish Community.”

In 2022, the estimated population of Amish people in the United States is roughly 343,000, or 98% of the 350,665 population total of the North American Amish. The locus of the Amish communities in the United States is the Midwest, especially including states such as Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, and Wisconsin. Northeastern states, such as Pennsylvania and New York, also have high populations of Amish.

The trend within Amish communities across the United States has been one of growth, and the total Amish population is projected to exceed 400,000 individuals by the year 2024, if current trends continue.
