Introduction
Assisted living entails living in a facility where a senior or a person with disabilities who isn’t able to live independently is cared for by others, helped in their daily routines and medical care. Assisted living can also encompass at-home care. At-home care gives a senior or a person with disabilities access to transportation, companionship, and general assistance in daily tasks including cooking and bathing. Assisted living facilities are therefore designed for people who would like to preserve some degree of independence. A resident’s stay can vary greatly, from short-term to a more permanent situation.
Assisted living can be often quite expensive. However, the cost varies depending on what type of assisted living a person gets and which state they live in. In the United States in 2021, the national average cost to stay in an assisted living facility was $4,500 per month. In-home care, on average, was $4,957 per month. However, the national average price of being in a nursing home is more. The average cost of staying in a semi-private room in a nursing home is $7,908 per month, while having a room that is completely private costs $9,034 per month. Since 2016, the costs of in-home care and assisted living facilities have increased by roughly 1/3.
