Introduction

While McDonald’s is a global icon, the fast-food giant does not have a presence in many countries worldwide. There are 123 countries where McDonald’s has not set up a restaurant yet, including Afghanistan, Bhutan, Iran, Iraq, Libya, and North Korea, among many others.

There are various reasons why some countries do not have McDonald’s outlets. One factor is the country’s political environment or religious beliefs, which may not allow for the promotion of Western fast food chains. For example, in Iran and North Korea, the absence of McDonald’s outlets can be attributed to their respective governments’ disapproval of Western culture. Similarly, in Bhutan, the country’s government prioritizes promoting local cuisine, which means there is no room for the fast-food chain’s international menu.

Another possible reason why some countries do not have McDonald’s is due to the country’s economic situation or lack of demand for fast food. For example, some of the countries that do not have McDonald’s, such as Somalia, Eritrea, and Sierra Leone, have been experiencing political instability and economic challenges for decades, and there may not be enough demand for fast food in such situations.

The absence of McDonald’s in some countries can provide an insight into the country’s political, economic, and cultural climate. Thomas Friedman even developed a theory that states that no two countries with McDonald’s franchises have ever gone to war with each other since they both have a stake in the global economy and interconnectedness that comes with it.

While this theory is not a foolproof predictor of conflict prevention, it has had a similar effect to the Big Mac Index, in that it gave the wider public a playful tool for understanding the links between economic interdependence and armed conflicts in the world.
