Introduction
Despite the fact that high income countries make up a small percentage of the world’s population, they account for a large share of the world’s GNI. In fact, the top 20% of high income countries are responsible for over 80% of the world’s GNI. This is largely due to the fact that these countries have much higher per capita incomes than other countries. For example, the United States has a GNI per capita of over $70,000, while the GNI per capita in some low income countries is less than $1,000.
High income countries also tend to have much higher levels of human development than other countries. This is reflected in indicators such as life expectancy, educational attainment, and access to health care. For example, life expectancy in high income countries is an average of 82 years, while in low income countries it is just 64 years. Similarly, the adult literacy rate in high income countries is nearly 100%, while in low income countries it is just 61%.
There are a number of reasons why high income countries have such high levels of GNI and human development. One reason is that these countries tend to have much stronger economies than other countries. They also tend to have better governance and rule of law, which promotes economic activity and investment. Additionally, high income countries often have better access to technology and infrastructure, which further boosts economic growth.
