Introduction
Christianity, the largest religion in the world, is an Abrahamic religion that believes Jesus of Nazareth is the son of God and is centered around his birth, life, death, and resurrection. There were over 2.2 billion Christians in the world as of 2015 and it is projected to increase to over 3 billion by the year 2060. It is also the most widely diffused faith. Under the banner of Christianity, there is an array of different branches, including Catholicism (which is governed by the Pope), Eastern Orthodoxy, and Protestantism.
From its humble beginnings in Roman-occupied Israel in the first century A.D., Christianity spread across the rest of the Roman Empire and, eventually, the world. As of 2017, there were thirteen countries that officially adopted Christianity as their state religion, and twenty-eight countries legally prefer or favor it.
