Introduction
Americans have long enjoyed pets. Dogs particularly have been a staple in American life from the foundation of the republic. Providing a sense of companionship to millions throughout generations.
While they come with various responsibilities, whether practical or financial, many people feel they greatly benefit from the companionship of pets. Common pets people choose are dogs, cats, birds, reptiles, fish, and rabbits; however, some people opt for other, more exotic animals.
In their 2019 Pet Ownership and Demographics Sourcebook, the American Veterinary Medical Association found that about 57% of American households owned at least one pet, this was up from 56% in 2011.
