Introduction
Abortion is a highly contested topic globally, and the rates and legality of it vary significantly between countries. In some countries, abortion is allowed on demand or with few restrictions, while in others it is illegal or only permitted under certain conditions. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 56 million induced abortions are carried out worldwide each year. The abortion rate ranges from below 10 per 1,000 women of reproductive age to over 50 per 1,000 women. Interestingly, developed countries tend to have lower abortion rates than developing countries; this may be due to improved access to contraception as well as better sex education strategies which can help prevent unintended pregnancies in the first place.
