Introduction

Alcoholism is a chronic disorder characterized by the abuse of and dependency on alcohol; it is characterized as either mild, moderate, or severe based on the number of symptoms present. The symptoms of alcoholism may include: being unable to limit the amount one drinks; the desire to cut down on the amount one drinks or making unsuccessful attempts to do so; drinking in situations where it is unsafe to do so, and giving up or reducing social or work activities to consume alcohol.

The frequency of alcoholism in one country is expressed as the percentage of that country’s population who is affected by alcoholism. This percentage can then be used to compare the rate of alcoholism in different countries. The frequency of alcoholism in a country does not directly correlate to its alcohol consumption. This is because it could have a large population that drinks but few with alcoholism; the same would be true in reverse.

An excessive consumption of alcohol or alcohol dependency may cause various negative outcomes: it may lead to a higher risk of health issues, increasing crimes, road accidents, and death.
