Introduction
From processed foods to sugary beverages, to less active lifestyles, obesity is an international crisis affecting the young and old alike. Obesity can lead to many negative health conditions, including hypertension, diabetes, and stroke. Body mass index (“BMI”) is the tool used to measure obesity; while BMI can be measured in several ways, the most common method is by dividing a person’s weight by their height squared.
Obesity rates greatly vary by country, with some nations having very little obesity and others nearing half of their population being obese. While it is not conclusive, wealthier countries often have a higher obesity rate than less developed countries. Some countries have implemented government initiatives to raise awareness on the risks of obesity and educate the public on how to live a healthier lifestyle.
