Introduction

Per capita income (PCI) is a common measurement that assesses the average income earned per person in a certain region and during a specific year. It is calculated by adding up all incomes within the region and dividing it by the region’s population, which includes children as well as adults. While this measure has its limitation (e.g. not taking inflation into consideration), PCI is a useful method for comparing the standard of living and quality of life of various regions: the higher the per capita income is, the wealthier a population is.

Nationwide, the per capita income was $35,384 in 2020 according to the United States Census Bureau. Looking more precisely into each state, the PCI can differ greatly from one to another. Various factors can affect the PCI, including, but not limited to, education, the type of population, overall economic well-being, and specific state legislation.
