Smartest States

Intelligence Quotient (“IQ”) is a score calculated from standardized tests which are designed to assess intelligence. Though confidence in IQ tests is across the board, many view a high IQ as a sign of intellectual worth. Opponents of IQ tests point out the near impossibility of being able to accurately compare people’s intellect on paper, while proponents argue that IQ tests are scientifically designed to accurately measure IQ.

In early 2022, the National Institute of Health (“NIH”) published a dataset that estimates and compares the average IQ of the fifty states. The dataset relied on scores from the Program for the International Assessment of Educational Progress (for adults), the National Assessment of Educational Progress (for fourth and eighth-grade children), and a “global well-being score” (which takes into account crime, income, health, and education). The NIH found the national average IQ to be 98.
