Dumbest States

Measuring people’s intelligence in the United States will undoubtedly produce varied results, particularly due to the nation’s sheer size and population number, seeing some states in a better position than others. Some would therefore be considered to be the “smartest” states, while others that do not rank as high, would be considered to be the “dumbest” states. But the “dumbest” states are not states that are populated with “dumb” individuals. A “dumb” state simply means that this state has a greater population with lower IQ scores than the rest of the states in the country. In addition, the intelligence of a state is determined by the average IQ of its citizens, which is calculated by standard tests. Yet, it is often argued that these tests only focus on a certain type of intelligence and do not take into account other broader forms of intelligence including creativity, emotion, or social intelligence. In the end, regardless of how a state is labeled – “smart” or “dumb” – there are intelligent people all around the country.

In 2022, the average “Intelligence Quotient” (IQ) by state ranged only slightly between the states in the U.S. The scores of IQ tests generally range between 55 at the low end, to 145 at the high end. Less than 1% of the population has an IQ less than 55 or greater than 145, so both extremes are very rare.

Generally speaking, when everyone’s IQs are graphed from across the country, most people pool in the center of the distribution. What that means is that the majority of people have IQs that range between 85—115. The mean IQ is 100, which means that people who have an IQ of 100 are the most prevalent in our society. As you move away from the center in either direction, the likelihood of encountering or being someone with that IQ is greatly diminished.

The 10 Dumbest States

According to each state’s average IQ, Mississippi is the “dumbest” state in the nation, with IQ scores of 94.2. Closely behind are Louisiana (95.3) and California (95.5) that can also be designated as some of America’s dumbest states. The next dumbest states on the list are Hawaii (95.6), Alabama and New Mexico (95.7), Nevada (96.5), Arizona (97.4), Arkansas (97.5), and Tennessee (97.7). Like the smartest states, the dumbest states also share commonalities in the domain of education: their public education systems are not as efficient and as robust as other states’ education systems. In fact, California has the highest rate of individuals lacking a high school diploma. Mississippi and Louisiana also have a high percentage of their population lacking a high school diploma and have a low rate of students that graduated from public high schools in comparison to the rest of the country.

The 10 states with the lowest estimated IQ are:

  1. Mississippi – 94.2
  2. Louisiana – 95.3
  3. California – 95.5
  4. Hawaii – 95.6
  5. Alabama – 95.7
  6. New Mexico – 95.7
  7. Nevada – 96.5
  8. Arizona – 97.4
  9. Arkansas – 97.5
  10. Tennessee – 97.7
