Introduction

The number of visits to fitness centers across the United States saw a significant increase in January 2023 compared to the same time frame in 2022. According to data this rise was especially pronounced in many states, with the District of Columbia recording a whopping 249% jump. Hawaii followed closely behind with an impressive 56%, while Alaska posted 54%. Other states that experienced at least a 50% increase included California (51%), Oregon (45%), Illinois (43%), Massachusetts (43%), Nevada (43%), Maryland (37%), Washington (36%) and Maine (33%).

In terms of other states that saw increases beyond 25%, Missouri notched 33%, New York 32%, Texas 32%, Colorado 31%, Montana 31%, Indiana 30%, North Carolina 30% and Wisconsin 30%. West Virginia managed 7 % growth and in contrast North Dakota reported a decrease of 3 % for January 2023 compared to January 2022.

Overall these numbers illustrate an encouraging trend for the fitness industry nationwide. In particular, many areas reported double digit gains which is indicative of consumer confidence returning after some challenging months due to Covid-19 restrictions. With more people choosing health and wellness as their primary focus for 2021, it is clear that gyms are set to remain popular destinations for those looking to break into a healthy lifestyle or maintain their current routine.
