Introduction

Buddhism, a religion from Asia and the Indian subcontinent, is one of the largest religions in the world; in 2010, there were approximately 488 million Buddhists. Founded by Siddhartha Gautama, or Buddha, Buddhism began in India in between 400 to 500 BC. A key belief of Buddhism is reincarnation, that after death a person is reborn until the reach enlightenment, or Nirvana.

Identifying Buddhist countries can be difficult because of Buddhism’s popularity as both a religion and philosophy. Buddhism as a philosophy has become increasingly popular for people to find inner peace and practice mental discipline. Moreover, some countries may formally adopt Buddhism as their formal religion while others may simply have a large percentage of citizens that practice Buddhism.
