Introduction

The MPRE (Multistate Professional Responsibility Examination) is an ethics exam that is required for admission to the bar in all U.S. states and jurisdictions except for Wisconsin and Puerto Rico. The exam is developed and administered by the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE), and the minimum passing score varies by state.

The states with the highest minimum passing scores for the MPRE are California and Utah, which require a minimum score of 86. The next highest minimum passing score is 85, and it is held by 21 states in the country, including the states of Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wyoming.

Tennessee is the only state in the country with an MPRE passing score of 82. The next highest passing score is 80, which is a score that 17 states currently hold – these states are Alaska, Connecticut, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia.

New Hampshire has an MPRE passing score of 79, while South Carolina has one of 77. The six remaining states all have an MPRE passing score set at 75.

The MPRE tests knowledge of professional conduct and ethics in the legal profession. The exam is made up of 60 multiple-choice questions, which test a candidate’s understanding of the American Bar Association’s Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the ABA Model Code of Judicial Conduct.

A passing score on the MPRE is typically required before a candidate can take the bar exam in their state. While the minimum passing score may vary by state, it is important for all aspiring lawyers to strive for a high score on the MPRE, as it reflects their understanding of ethical principles and professional responsibility.
