Introduction

Common Core is a set of standards that may be used by states when assessing the literacy of its students in mathematics and English language arts. The program was designed after years of stagnation in the progression of education standards across the United States. Common Core was designed to ensure that graduate high school students are prepared for college or a career.

While states are not required to adopt the Common Core standards, there is funding available for states that adopt the standards; these funds can be critical for states’ education programs and be the driving factor in the decision to adopt Common Core.

Of the fifty states, forty-one states, as well as the District of Columbia, Guam, American Samoan Islands, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Northern Mariana Islands, have adopted the Common Core standards.
