Cancer Rates by State

Cancer is a group of diseases that involve abnormal cell growth that have the potential to spread to other parts of the body.

Across the United States and the broader world, people suffer from cancer in large numbers. Causes of cancer vary, but some common causes are smoking, poor diet, obesity, lack of physical activity, and excessive alcohol and drinking. Some states report higher numbers of people diagnosed with cancer than others. Cancer is a type of disease that causes a person’s cells to multiply uncontrollably, often causing them to form into tumors and prevent the body from functioning properly. The numbers represented below reflect the totals of all types of cancer, without distinguishing by type unless otherwise specified.

In 2019, 1,752,735 new cancer cases appeared throughout the United States. Compared to the total U.S. population of 328,239,523 in 2019, the number of new cancer cases represents .0053% of the total population. By state, however, the percentage is higher.
