Introduction
The Fifa World Cup, also known as the World Cup, is an international football tournament contested by men’s national football teams. The World Cup has been carried out every four years since its beginning in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 due to the Second World War. The tournament is incredibly popular with billions of football fans worldwide tuning in to support their representative countries – in the last World Cup in 2018 around 3.572 billion people watched. The current World Cup champion is France, who won the title at the 2018 tournament held in Russia.
The World Cup is held in host nations every four years, these nations have included: Brazil, Italy, France, Uruguay, Switzerland, Mexico and Germany both of which have hosted twice, Chile England, Sweden, Japan and South Korea jointly hosting the tournament, Spain, the United States, Argentina, South Africa, Russia, and the 2022 World Cup is being hosted in Qatar.
The way the tournament is structured is firstly by a qualification stage that takes place the three years prior to the actual World Cup to determine who qualifies for the competition – those that do qualify enter the tournament. The next stage is by a group formation, where 32 teams are put into eight groups, followed by the round of sixteen, the quarter final, and then a final. The nation that is hosting the World Cup automatically qualifies for the competition.

FIFA World Cup
The Fifa World Cup, which garners billions of fans cheering for their respective countries, is a tournament watched by the world. With increased accessibility to the internet and a far more globalized world, compared to say fifty years ago, billions more people are now able to tune in and share the enjoyment of a world sporting event. However, as with any major event, controversy does arise. In 1950, the nations of Germany and Japan were not allowed to enter the first World Cup after the Second World War which was hosted by Brazil. This is not the only instance of politics being actively pursued in a major sporting event, as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar clearly shows. One has seen the Russian national team banned from partaking in the 2022 Qatar World Cup and also seen not only the Russian national team but also domestic Russian teams excluded from playing in European football tournaments too, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Furthermore, another area of controversy that surrounds the 2022 Qatar World Cup is the host nation itself, Qatar. Firstly, the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has been put into question as there have been numerous allegations of bribery between Qatari officials and FIFA members and executives. Secondly, there is the criticism of Qatar’s suitability as a host nation with many pointing to the country’s human rights record, the treatment and deaths of migrant workers who built the infrastructure needed to host the World Cup, and slavery allegations. These controversies have even led some broadcasters in some nations, such as in France for instance, to boycott broadcasting of the 2022 World Cup.
