Introduction
The phrases “Defense Spending” and “Military Budget” are often used interchangeably. Very roughly, defense spending refers to the amount of money that’s spent annually by a government to arm itself with the necessary weapons, equipment, and soldiers required to defend itself from aggressor countries.
The cumulative annual military spending of every nation on earth combined is greater than one trillion dollars. However, only a few handfuls of countries add a significant sum of money to that tremendous number. Today, many of the military allies of the United States amass the highest annual defense spending, though that annual number varies each year depending on the needs of the individual country’s budget.
The primary thing that has the largest effect on the size of a defense budget is the quantity of land a country is attempting to defend. This is especially true as the land that a country is attempting to defend isn’t all connected but is rather dispersed in the midst of other bordering countries.
