Introduction
The British Commonwealth of Nations is a group of 56 countries that were, for the most part, formerly part of the British Empire. It is made up of large, small, and island states with diverse cultural, religious, and linguistic backgrounds. With the exception of Mozambique and Rwanda, all member countries are former or current British colonies or dependencies. Each country is represented in the Commonwealth by its Head of State, who serves as a symbol of unity for the group of nations. The primary objective of the Commonwealth is to promote peace and prosperity among its members by encouraging collaboration on matters such as trade, democracy, health care, education, culture, environment conservation, gender equality and human rights protection. The organization also provides an important forum for global dialogue on issues affecting its members, as well as providing various forms of financial assistance such as grants to help develop infrastructure in some member countries. The Commonwealth also works to address world challenges such as poverty reduction through sustainable economic growth.
