Introduction

There have been forty-five different presidents since the founding of the United States of America. However, only twenty-two states have been the birthplace of a president. Of those twenty-two states, half of United States presidents were born in one of four states.

Virginia is the birthplace of most of the presidents, being home to eight: George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, Zachary Tayler, John Tylor, and Woodrow Wilson. The next states that are home to the most presidents are Ohio (7), New York (5), and Massachusetts (4).

It should also be noted that while some presidents are born in one state, they often identify more closely with a different state. For example, Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky but moved to Illinois. Barack Obama, born in Hawaii, also moved to Illinois. George W. Bush was born in Connecticut, but was raised in Texas where he would become governor. Similarly, Joe Biden was born in Pennsylvania but is now closely associated with Delaware, where he grew up and was politically involved.
