Introduction
Though there is no set number of political parties in the United States, there has been a de facto two-party system since the country’s conception. However, since the 1970s a third party has since gained some traction: the Libertarian Party.
Libertarianism holds liberty at the center of their political philosophy, advocating for next-to-no government intervention—their party slogan being “minimum government, maximum freedom.” Libertarians seek maximum autonomy and political freedom and object to any encroachment on their individual freedoms, such as freedom of movement, choice, expression, trade, and individualism.
The Libertarian Party was founded in Colorado in 1971, and in the 2020 election, Libertarian candidates received about 1.2% of the total votes, i.e. 1.8 million net votes.
Learn for yourself which states have the highest percentage of votes for Libertarian candidates by browsing the data in the charts.
