Introduction

The cause of environmentalism has become more and more attractive worldwide, as humanity comes face to face with the devastating effects of climate change. This self-wrought crisis threatens to destroy the only planet we have, and could see billions of people being displaced or even losing their lives. In response to the ever-growing climate crisis, countries have started implementing ‘green’ measures, such as ending dependence on fossil fuels, recycling campaigns, and waste reduction/cleanup efforts. Sustainability has been incorporated into daily practices and modern industries too, but there is still a long way to go.

The countries that are generally considered the greenest are often wealthy and western, as they have the means to afford expensive renewable energy and the infrastructure that comes with it, while poorer countries still depend on cheap fossil fuels to maintain their energy security. The way to measure the environmental friendliness of a country and its policies is through the Environmental Performance Index, which shows how close a country is to achieve its sustainable development goals set by the United Nations.
