Introduction
The E-ZPass was created in 1987 as an electronic toll collection system to be used on most roads, bridges, and tunnels that require a toll in the Midwestern and Eastern states. The E-ZPass works by transmitting radio signals, through an RFID transponder, which communicates payment information through designated E-ZPass lanes. E-ZPass accounts operate like a debit account, where users prepay and add money into their accounts, which are deducted when they physically go through a toll.
E-ZPasses are distributed by the E-ZPass Interagency Group, a group of thirty-eight agencies in eighteen states. The E-ZPass is used in Delaware, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Virginia, and West Virginia. Some agencies may charge activation fees, monthly or annual fees, and also have required minimum balances.
