Do you think poker bad beat jackpots are a fun form of entertainment?

Rivers Casino in Des Plaines, Illinois paid a bad beat jackpot totaling $659,941.70 after a straight flush lost to a higher straight flush in a cash game. The event occurred last week.

Why it matters

Bad beat jackpots are funded by a small house contribution from every pot, so large payouts reflect the progressive pool built up at the table. The payout gives a rare large windfall to the seven players at the table.

The jackpot totals $659,941.70, with the losing player taking $329,974 and the winning player $164,985, while each of the other six players received $27,497. A straight flush is hit by roughly 1 in 3,200 players, and the house takes $1 from each pot to build the progressive jackpot.

Legal Context

Bad beat jackpots of this size have precedent in recent years, including Playground Poker Club's CAD $2.2 million payout in July 2025 in Quebec. The Rivers payout sits within that broader pattern of large progressive poker pools in North American card rooms.

Players at Rivers Casino can take part in bad beat jackpot pools only while seated at qualifying cash game tables. Each pot contributes $1 to the progressive jackpot, so the payout is tied to playing at participating tables.

The takeaway

Bad beat jackpots pay out large sums to multiple players when a strong hand loses to an even stronger one. Players who sit at these tables should understand that the progressive pool is funded by a small fee from every pot.
