Telkom has rolled out Fibre-to-the-Room in South Africa through Openserve, using fibre-linked Wi-Fi access points to create an all-optical in-home network. The solution is available to qualifying consumer and SMB customers with an Openserve Postpaid Fibre service.

Why it matters

The offering targets spotty Wi-Fi connectivity inside homes, a problem that affects households with many connected devices, thick walls or multiple storeys. It gives customers a fibre-based option to extend coverage throughout the home.

The base 1+1 solution pairs one Main Fibre to the Room Gateway with one Edge device and supports up to 15 Edge devices in total. Pricing for the solution has not yet been disclosed.

The players

Telkom

Telkom is a South African telecommunications company that developed the Fibre-to-the-Room offering in partnership with Openserve.

Openserve

Openserve is Telkom's fibre infrastructure arm, offering the Postpaid Fibre service that qualifies customers for Fibre-to-the-Room.

The details

Customers can add further Edge devices depending on their home's layout and connectivity needs. Payment can be made as a once-off amount or over 12, 24 or 36 months, and professional installation is available in selected areas of Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal and Cape Town.

Timeline

  1. 2 November 2026: Telkom announces the Fibre-to-the-Room rollout via Openserve.

  2. November 2026: Telkom is expected to showcase FTTR at Africa Tech Festival 2026.

Under the Hood

Fibre-to-the-Room departs from wireless mesh extender systems, which relay Wi-Fi signals over the air, by carrying the signal over fibre to each access point. It positions Telkom's home offering against wireless-only approaches to in-home coverage.

Households with spotty Wi-Fi in certain rooms could use Fibre-to-the-Room to improve coverage, provided they hold a qualifying Openserve Postpaid Fibre service. Customers can choose between a once-off payment or instalments over 12, 24 or 36 months.

The takeaway

Households with multiple devices, larger homes or thick walls should check whether Fibre-to-the-Room is available in their area and whether their current plan qualifies. Comparing the once-off and instalment options against their connectivity needs can help them decide.
