Pitt Tool Reviews Online Courses in Under Three Minutes
The University of Pittsburgh's Canvas OLC Insights tool evaluates online courses against 50 Quality Scorecard objectives.
Updated on Nov. 3, 2026 in Distance Learning

The University of Pittsburgh has developed an AI tool that reviews online and hybrid courses in under three minutes, down from two to four hours for manual reviews. The Canvas OLC Insights tool was created by the Pitt Cloud Innovation Center, powered by Amazon Web Services, at the request of Pitt EDGE.
Why it matters
Hundreds of courses are revised every 12 to 18 months, so manual reviews placed significant demands on instructional designers, and reviewers sometimes interpreted certain criteria inconsistently. The tool is designed so other Online Learning Consortium institutions can adapt it, and its code is publicly available on GitHub.
The tool evaluates online and hybrid courses against 50 objectives of the Online Learning Consortium's Quality Scorecard, reducing review time from two to four hours to under three minutes. Its performance beyond the University of Pittsburgh has not been reported.
The players
University of Pittsburgh
A public research university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, which developed the tool and released its code publicly.
Online Learning Consortium
An international organization focused on quality standards for online education, whose Quality Scorecard the tool applies.
The details
The tool retrieves course materials through the Canvas application programming interface and uses Claude Sonnet 4.6 through AWS Bedrock to evaluate them, with Claude Haiku 4.5 generating improvement recommendations. An earlier ChatGPT-based trial encountered limitations involving course size, data governance and system integration, and AI scoring alone agreed with expert reviewers only at approximately chance level until human confirmation was added.
Timeline
Manual course reviews previously took between two and four hours.
Hundreds of courses undergo revision approximately every 12 to 18 months.
The announcement was published on November 3, 2026.
Season Trajectory
The tool applies the Online Learning Consortium's Quality Scorecard, whose 50 objectives it checks automatically instead of through manual review. Institutions adopting the tool would therefore measure online course quality against the same published standard.
Students enrolled in online or hybrid courses may see revised materials as instructors update courses on the 12-to-18-month cycle the university described. Instructors and course designers at participating institutions could see their review workload shrink substantially.
The takeaway
Automating course review frees instructional designers for revision work, but the reported results show that human confirmation was needed to match expert judgment. Online learners benefit most when institutions pair speed with reviewer oversight.
