Energix US has brought its 152-MWdc Border Basin solar plant in Hancock County, Ohio, online, with 120 MWac of capacity. Stem supplied the plant's control, data acquisition, monitoring and networking systems.

Why it matters

The project adds a large solar installation to Ohio's grid and shows a developer relying on a single software platform across the plant's operations. Stem also said a board-level review of strategic alternatives, including a possible sale, is underway.

The plant's 152 MWdc and 120 MWac ratings yield a 1.27 DC-to-AC ratio, and it occupies 966 acres of a 1,378-acre project area, roughly 6.4 acres per MWdc. The Ohio Power Siting Board attached 44 conditions to construction and operation, and the stub does not report expected generation output.

The players

Energix Renewables

Energix Renewables is an Arlington, Virginia-based developer that has worked in the U.S. since 2016 and builds mainly in Virginia and Pennsylvania.

Stem, Inc.

Stem is an energy storage and software company whose PowerTrack platform runs control, monitoring and analytics for solar and storage assets.

Ohio Power Siting Board

The Ohio Power Siting Board is the state body that reviews and approves major energy facilities, and it approved this plant's construction.

The details

Stem handled the work from conceptual design through operator handoff, including PJMnet integration, power plant controls, local SCADA, communications hardware and meteorological stations. The company assembled control panels in its own shop, ran factory acceptance tests, commissioned the site and took part in utility witness testing.

Timeline

  1. Feb. 16, 2023: Ohio Power Siting Board approved the 120-MW facility in Cass Township.

  2. Nov. 3, 2026: Energix US brought the Border Basin plant online.

Roadmap

Stem says PowerTrack now supports 38 GW of solar and 1.8 GWh of storage, and this Ohio plant extends that footprint into the PJM market. Energix's portfolio in PJM grows to about 1 GW with the addition.

Ohio electricity customers may see the plant's output feed into the regional grid as it operates. The stub does not describe any change to consumer rates or service.

The takeaway

Large solar projects increasingly depend on centralized software to manage control, monitoring and data across many sites. Watching how developers and software vendors share that work can clarify where a plant's performance is actually managed.

What happens next

Stem reports third-quarter results after the market close on Nov. 5, 2026.
