Altera has introduced its Agilex 27 FPGA platform, which utilizes the HyperFlow architecture to deliver a 1.8X improvement in performance-per-watt over the previous Agilex 7 generation. The launch also features the QuartusIQ AI tool, designed to accelerate design creation workflows by 10X using integrated NVIDIA Nemotron models.

Why it matters

These advancements provide engineers with higher throughput capabilities, including 1.6TbE support and faster design cycles, to meet the escalating demands of modern high-performance computing. By automating parts of the development process with local AI models, Altera aims to reduce the complexity inherent in configuring high-speed transceiver and memory architectures.

The Agilex 27 platform supports 800GbE and 1.6TbE Ethernet alongside PCIe 6.0 and 7.0 protocols, with transceivers reaching speeds of 256Gbps. It incorporates third-generation HyperFlex registers and memory controllers for DDR5, LPDDR4, LPDDR5X, and LPDDR6.

The players

Altera

This company specializes in the design and manufacturing of programmable logic devices, including field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) used in data centers and industrial systems.

NVIDIA

This corporation is a leading developer of graphics processing units and AI computing platforms that are used to power high-performance design software.

The details

The platform utilizes the HyperFlow architecture to manage data traffic on a dedicated network that bypasses the programmable fabric. The QuartusIQ tool will integrate directly into RTX Station systems to streamline implementation during the design cycle.

Timeline

  1. QuartusIQ is scheduled for release in Q4 2026.

  2. Agilex 27 engineering samples are expected in the second half of 2027.

The Tech Race

The Agilex 27 platform marks a generation-over-generation advancement in power efficiency compared to the Agilex 7 FPGA platform. This move positions Altera to compete more aggressively in high-speed networking and AI-driven design by integrating sophisticated silicon architecture with generative AI tools.

Engineers and system developers can expect to see significantly faster design cycle times, reducing the overhead required to implement complex hardware configurations. The integration of QuartusIQ into standard workstations will likely streamline the workflow for teams currently managing high-bandwidth computing tasks.

The takeaway

The integration of AI-driven design tools into hardware development marks a shift toward automated chip configuration that could significantly shorten time-to-market. Developers should prepare to adopt generative AI companion tools as they become standard features in modern engineering environments.

What happens next

Engineering samples for the Agilex 27 platform are anticipated to become available in the second half of 2027.
