Would you use AI-generated music to replace copyrighted songs in your own videos?

YouTube has expanded its Replace Song AI music generator to creators in most countries outside the European Economic Area. The tool lets creators replace claimed audio in older videos with royalty-free AI instrumental tracks.

Why it matters

The feature makes it easier for creators to keep older videos online and earning revenue after an audio claim. Creators in the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein remain excluded.

Each click of the Create button in the Replace Song Suggestions tab generates four royalty-free instrumental tracks, each about three minutes long, with no text prompt and no vocals. YouTube has not disclosed which AI model produces the tracks, and the feature is limited to desktop YouTube Studio for now.

The players

YouTube

YouTube is Google's video-sharing platform, which operates the Content ID system that issues audio claims against user uploads.

Google

Google is the parent company of YouTube and developer of the Lyria music models that power YouTube's Music Assistant tool for Partner Program creators.

The details

Creators whose videos receive an audio claim open the Suggestions tab in YouTube Studio and click Create to generate four instrumental tracks. Once all claimed audio is replaced, the Content ID claim is removed automatically, but edits saved in the Studio editor cannot be undone. Generated tracks can be looped on the timeline, adjusted for volume and downloaded as MP3 files.

Timeline

  1. May 2026: The Create button was first added for US creators.

  2. June 2025: Edits saved in the YouTube Studio editor became irreversible.

  3. November 3, 2026: The Replace Song AI generator expanded to most countries outside the European Economic Area.

Roadmap

The expansion extends YouTube's Content ID audio-claim system by giving creators a generative alternative to muting or removing claimed audio. It places YouTube's music tooling alongside Google's Lyria models as the platform pushes AI-generated audio into routine creator workflows.

Creators with claimed videos can now generate replacement background music instead of muting or deleting audio, keeping older uploads monetized. The feature is limited to desktop YouTube Studio, and creators in the EU, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein cannot yet use it.

The takeaway

Generative tools are moving directly into creator workflows, so creators with older claimed videos may find replacement audio is now a faster option than removal. Because edits in the Studio editor cannot be undone, saving a replacement is a permanent step worth checking first.
