Google announced Workspace updates that let Docs and Drive open and edit Markdown files directly, add voice search in Gmail and live speech translation in Meet. The October update also expands Docs and Sheets with AI-assisted drafting and data tools.

Why it matters

The changes target everyday collaboration across languages and formats, lowering barriers for teams working in multiple tongues or moving away from rival suites. Migration tools that bring Teams and SharePoint content into Workspace at no extra cost make the switch easier for organizations.

Meet's live translation covers 63 languages, and Sheets' AI function can process up to 3,000 cells per request. Google did not specify rollout dates or which subscription tiers receive each feature.

The players

Google

Google is the technology company that develops the Workspace suite of productivity and collaboration tools, including Gmail, Docs, Drive, Sheets and Meet.

The details

Docs and Drive now open and format Markdown (.md) files, including tables and links, while Docs adds comments and change tracking through version history. Gmail Live lets users search their inbox by voice, and Docs Live turns spoken ideas into drafts drawing on emails, chats and Drive files.

Language Learning Context

Google's live speech translation in Meet, which covers 63 languages, competes directly with Microsoft 365's Teams platform as both companies push real-time multilingual collaboration. The Workspace migration tools that move Teams and SharePoint content into Google's suite mark an open challenge to Microsoft's enterprise dominance.

Users who work across languages can now get live captions in their preferred language during Meet calls, with each participant able to turn speech translation on individually. Teams that use Teams or SharePoint can move files into Google Workspace at no extra cost using the new migration tools.

The takeaway

Enabling live translation per participant means multilingual groups can keep working in their own language without waiting for a shared one. Checking your Workspace admin settings early will show which of these features your plan includes.
