Torres Relishes Yamal Duel Ahead of Barcelona
Aston Villa defender Pau Torres says facing Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal in the Champions League is a challenge he welcomes.
Updated on Nov. 2, 2026 in Soccer
Aston Villa defender Pau Torres said he welcomes the prospect of facing Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal when the two sides meet at the Camp Nou on Tuesday. Villa have won all three of their Champions League fixtures so far this season.
Why it matters
The match tests Villa's unbeaten start in the Champions League against a Barcelona side that has yet to find consistency, with Barcelona sitting eighth in the standings. Yamal's form makes the duel a focal point for both teams' defensive and attacking plans.
Pau Torres has started every Champions League game this season and contributed two assists, while Barcelona have gone 15 home matches unbeaten against English opposition. Villa's Premier League form is less settled, with a 1-1 draw against Fulham leaving them ninth in the table.
The players
Pau Torres
Aston Villa defender who has started every Champions League game this season and has contributed two assists in the competition.
Lamine Yamal
Barcelona forward who has scored two goals and provided four assists in three Champions League appearances this season.
The details
Torres spoke to the Catalan daily Sport ahead of the trip, saying Yamal catches defenders by surprise and is unpredictable in his movement. Villa face Barcelona at the Camp Nou on Tuesday, November 3, after drawing 1-1 with Fulham at Villa Park on Saturday.
Timeline
Saturday: Aston Villa draw 1-1 with Fulham at Villa Park.
Tuesday, November 3: Aston Villa face Barcelona at the Camp Nou.
Season Trajectory
Aston Villa won the Europa League last season and finished in the Premier League top four, and their three opening Champions League wins extend that European momentum. Their current ninth-place Premier League position shows the domestic campaign has been less consistent than the continental run.
Villa's result at the Camp Nou will affect their Champions League standing as the group stage continues. Fantasy managers tracking Torres and Yamal should note the Tuesday fixture's Champions League context.
The takeaway
Villa's perfect Champions League start gives them a route into the knockout stages, and the Barcelona match will show whether their European form holds against elite opposition.
