HKMA Advances EnsembleTX to 24/7 Tokenized Trading
Hong Kong's central banking authority moves its tokenized-asset platform into a round-the-clock real-value transaction phase while expanding its digital finance initiatives.
Updated on Nov. 2, 2026 in Quantum Computing

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority advanced its EnsembleTX platform into a phase enabling real-value tokenized transactions around the clock. The move follows completed trial activity in which Recognised Dealers traded tokenized Exchange Fund Bills on the secondary market.
Why it matters
The shift moves tokenized asset trading from trial into live operation, with the platform intended to support global fund deployment, tokenized-asset portfolio management and treasury operations. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is simultaneously pursuing post-quantum cryptography, agentic artificial intelligence and payment integration measures.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority's announcement cites reach figures of more than 100 million merchants for planned QR-code payments and more than 40 overseas markets for UnionPay International, but provides no transaction volume or trading value data for EnsembleTX. Live trading volumes and the scale of secondary-market activity remain undisclosed.
The players
Hong Kong Monetary Authority
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is the central banking institution responsible for monetary stability and financial regulation in Hong Kong, and it oversees the EnsembleTX tokenization platform.
UnionPay International
UnionPay International is the international arm of China's national bankcard payment network, operating in more than 40 overseas markets beyond mainland China.
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is a public research university in Hong Kong that co-released the PQC Toolkit with the monetary authority.
The details
Recognised Dealers conducted secondary-market trades involving tokenized Exchange Fund Bills during completed trial activity before the platform moved to round-the-clock operation. The authority also launched Project SAGE, formed a cross-sectoral Agentic Finance Expert Group, and released a discussion paper on banks' use of agentic artificial intelligence seeking industry feedback.
Timeline
Oct. 26: The authority held a briefing on Project Ensemble and quantum preparedness at a Hong Kong fintech coordination group meeting.
Nov. 2, 2026: EnsembleTX advanced to 24/7 real-value tokenized transactions.
End of 2026: The Faster Payment System connection with UnionPay International is planned.
Big Picture
The advance from trial to real-value operation extends Project Ensemble from pilot testing into live tokenized settlement, a step toward the planned expansion of EnsembleTX trials to regulated stablecoins. Hong Kong is pairing this with post-quantum cryptography and agentic artificial intelligence measures under its DART framework.
Tokenized assets traded around the clock could give institutional treasuries and fund managers a new settlement option once EnsembleTX is open to participants. Users of Hong Kong's payment systems may eventually see QR-code payments extend through the planned UnionPay connection.
The takeaway
Tokenized assets are moving from pilot trades toward live settlement, so institutions exploring digital treasury tools should track how EnsembleTX participation opens up. Banks should also begin evaluating post-quantum cryptography options using the PQC Toolkit released by the monetary authority.
What happens next
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority plans to connect Faster Payment System with UnionPay International by the end of 2026, a connection expected to progressively enable QR-code payments at more than 100 million merchants.
