NVIDIA is reportedly considering PTFE, commonly known as Teflon, for its next-generation NVLink switch boards. The material wastes far less signal energy than resins used in boards today, and Teflon was showcased at this year's TPCA Show.
Why it matters
AI chips are now pushing 200Gbps per lane and reaching their transmission limits. Co-packaged optics is not yet ready, so improving the circuit board is currently the most direct available solution.
Current AI chips transmit at 200Gbps per lane on boards reaching 70-plus layers, while industry estimates put overall PTFE board yields below 5 percent. It is unclear whether those yields can be raised before the material moves beyond sample-stage production.
The players
NVIDIA
NVIDIA is a leading designer of graphics processors and AI accelerator chips whose NVLink interconnect technology links GPUs within data center systems.
TPCA Show
The TPCA Show is an annual Taiwan-based trade exhibition focused on printed circuit board and related electronics manufacturing.
The details
PTFE is thin and soft, making it harder and costlier to process than epoxy or hydrocarbon resins, and it bonds poorly with other materials. Many of NVIDIA's listed partners have reportedly already secured much of the equipment capable of handling the material.
Timeline
Early October 2026: NVIDIA displayed its latest NVLink switch board at the OCP summit.
2026: Teflon was showcased at the TPCA Show.
Around 2028 to 2030: A clear outcome for PTFE use is expected.
The Tech Race
Co-packaged optics is the longer-term path for moving data between AI chips, but it is not yet ready for deployment. Until then, the industry is turning to circuit board materials like PTFE to keep copper-based signaling viable at higher speeds.
Consumers are unlikely to see direct changes soon, since PTFE boards remain at the sample stage with low reported yields. Any eventual shift would primarily affect the cost and availability of AI server hardware used in data centers.
The takeaway
Materials choices at the circuit board level can be as consequential as chip design itself when data rates push against physical limits. Watch yield data and partner equipment readiness to judge how quickly PTFE could move from samples to production.
