Should professional athletes have more influence over team trade decisions?
William Contreras initiated a three-week communication blackout with his agent after being traded from the Atlanta Braves on December 15, 2022. During this period, he requested that his agent attempt to facilitate a return to his former team.
Why it matters
Contreras was deeply frustrated by his departure from Atlanta, where he felt a strong connection to the team culture. His request for a return highlights the significant personal impact that sudden trades can have on players during their early career development.
Contreras maintained the silence for exactly 3 weeks following the December 15, 2022 transaction. This occurred shortly after his 2022 breakout campaign, which followed the Braves acquiring Sean Murphy.

Contreras now anchors a Milwaukee lineup currently holding a 2-0 series lead in the NLDS. His performance remains a critical variable for Milwaukee as they seek to clear the remaining obstacles in the playoff bracket.
The takeaway
Sudden roster moves are a common reality in professional sports that can temporarily disrupt a player's professional relationship with their representation. Players often find that successfully integrating into a new team culture is the most effective way to move past the frustration of a trade.
