Live Poll

Do you prefer having a variety of drive-in dining options in your local community?

Swensons Drive-In has permanently closed its location on Ohio Pike in Union Township. This site previously operated as the chain's first entry into the Cincinnati market.

Why it matters

The closure removes a significant outpost for the burger chain in the Cincinnati suburbs. Residents can still visit the company's remaining local branch on Madison Road in Oakley.

The Union Township location operated for nearly five years after opening in December 2021. The chain, which originated in Akron in 1934, maintains operations at its Oakley storefront.

The players

Swensons Drive-In

An Ohio-based restaurant chain known for its drive-in service model and burgers.

The details

The site on Ohio Pike was previously occupied by Scallywag Tag before being converted into a drive-in restaurant. Swensons began expanding its reach beyond its Akron roots in 2016 to bring its brand to other parts of Ohio.

1934: Swensons Drive-In was founded in Akron.
2016: The chain expanded operations outside of Akron.
December 2021: The Ohio Pike location opened.
October 2026: The Ohio Pike location closed.

Market Landscape

The closure of the Union Township site marks a contraction in the chain's regional footprint after years of aggressive expansion across Ohio. This decision forces a recalibration of the brand's presence within the competitive Cincinnati quick-service restaurant market.

Customers in Union Township will now need to travel to the Oakley location to access the chain's menu. The closure eliminates a dining option on the Ohio Pike corridor for frequent patrons.

The takeaway

The sudden loss of the Ohio Pike location serves as a reminder of the volatility within the suburban restaurant sector. Local diners should verify the status of their favorite chains before planning their next visit.
