Would you consider adopting a senior pet for your household?

Throughout November 2026, the City of Henderson Animal Protection Services will cut adoption fees by 50 percent for animals that are at least seven years old. This initiative coincides with the annual observance of Senior Pet Month.

Why it matters

The program encourages the adoption of older animals, which often face longer wait times at shelters. By lowering costs, the city aims to find permanent homes for senior pets during the month of November.

The 50% discount applies to any pet aged seven years or older adopted from the facility at 300 E. Galleria Drive. Prospective adopters must finalize their paperwork by 4:30 p.m. to qualify for the reduced rate.

The details

The Henderson Animal Protection Services facility operates Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adoptions for eligible senior pets must be completed before the daily 4:30 p.m. cutoff time to receive the promotion.

November 2026 marks the period when the 50% discount for senior pets is active.

Culture Shift

The city initiative aligns with the national Senior Pet Month efforts to promote the adoption of aging shelter animals. This movement challenges the cultural preference for younger animals, highlighting the unique companionship benefits of adopting senior pets.

Residents interested in adopting can visit the shelter at 300 E. Galleria Drive between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to take advantage of the reduced fees. Keep in mind that the facility is closed on Sundays and government holidays.

The takeaway

Adopting a senior pet can offer a calmer experience for families since older animals are often already house-trained. Interested adopters should plan their visits during the week to ensure they can complete the application process by 4:30 p.m.
