New Mexico State University has officially appointed Adeniyi Amadou as the head coach for the women's basketball program. The team is preparing to open its 2026-27 season at the Pan American Center in Las Cruces.
Why it matters
The program enters a rebuilding phase after being projected to finish 8th in Conference USA. With a heavy influx of international talent, the coach faces the challenge of integrating a roster dominated by freshmen.
The roster features nine freshmen and 12 players from France. Emma Christiano, the team's only returning player, recorded 39 steals last season and averaged 2.9 points per game.

Season Trajectory
The Aggies' 8th-place ranking in the Conference USA basketball preseason poll serves as the benchmark against which the new coaching staff must prove their competitive progress this season. Success hinges on how quickly the team of nine freshmen adapts to Division I play.
Fans should monitor the integration of the 12 French players, as their transition to American collegiate basketball will dictate the team's offensive efficiency. Emma Christiano will be the primary defensive anchor following her 39-steal performance last year.
The takeaway
Building a cohesive unit from a group of nine freshmen requires patience as the players learn to play together. Fans should keep a close eye on the season opener at the Pan American Center to gauge the team's chemistry early on.
