Omaha residents gathered on Sunday for CenterFest, a neighborhood event designed to support and celebrate local businesses. The festivities took place along a closed portion of Center Street in the Hanscom Park area.
Why it matters
The festival serves as a platform for local vendors to increase their visibility and connect with the community. By closing public streets for pedestrian traffic, organizers aimed to drive foot traffic directly to area storefronts.
The festival occupied Center Street between 34th and 36th streets to accommodate pedestrian-only zones. This configuration limited vehicular access for the duration of the event.

Industry Dynamics
This event reflects the broader cultural trend of Open Streets initiatives, which prioritize pedestrian-friendly urban spaces over vehicular traffic. Such programming shifts local commercial dynamics by centralizing foot traffic in historically car-dependent neighborhoods.
Residents and visitors enjoyed full pedestrian access to the commercial corridor during the street closure. Those planning to travel through Hanscom Park needed to utilize alternate routes while the 34th to 36th street segment remained closed.
The takeaway
Events like CenterFest offer a practical way for neighbors to support the local economy while reclaiming public space for community interaction. Residents looking to participate in future events should monitor city traffic bulletins for upcoming street closures.
