Cat Haven Opens New Baton Rouge Facility

Live Poll

Should local animal shelters prioritize cage-free environments to improve animal well-being?

Cat Haven is expanding its operations in Baton Rouge with a new facility located at 530 Shadows Lane. This addition includes a cat cafe and creates a more natural, cage-free environment for rescued animals.

Why it matters

The new facility allows the organization to increase its cat capacity, significantly expanding its ability to rescue and care for the local feline population. This growth helps fulfill the mission of an organization that has saved more than 25,000 cats and kittens since 1999.

The new facility will boost cat capacity to 125, an increase from the 75 cats currently housed at the North Harrells Ferry Road site. Since 1999, the organization has saved more than 25,000 cats and kittens.

The players

Cat Haven

This is a Baton Rouge animal welfare organization dedicated to rescuing and rehoming cats and kittens.

The details

Designed to provide a more natural, cage-free living space, the facility at 530 Shadows Lane incorporates a unique cat cafe experience. It will operate alongside the existing center on North Harrells Ferry Road to serve more animals in the area.

Cat Haven began its work saving cats and kittens in 1999.
The new center and cafe are expected to open by Dec. 1, 2026.

Culture Shift

This development follows the growing trend of integrating cat cafes into animal welfare operations to foster community engagement. By transitioning toward cage-free environments, the facility aligns with modern shifts in animal shelter management that prioritize natural behavior and socialization.

Residents can soon visit the new cat cafe to interact with adoptable cats in a cage-free setting. This expansion provides a more accessible local option for community members looking to adopt or support rescue efforts.

The takeaway

Adopting from a dedicated rescue organization helps manage the local stray population while ensuring animals are cared for in a healthy environment. Future visitors to the facility should look for updates regarding grand opening activities in late 2026.
