Matthew Rehwoldt made a surprise return to in-ring competition during the Call Your Shot Gauntlet match at TNA Bound For Glory in Tampa. He was eliminated from the contest by Heather By Elegance before returning to his commentary duties.
Why it matters
The appearance marked a rare return to competition for the 39-year-old, who shifted his professional focus to full-time commentary in 2022. It broke a hiatus from active wrestling that stretched back to his final WWE appearance in 2019.
Matthew Rehwoldt, age 39, entered the match after 2,748 days had passed since his last WWE outing in 2019. Shayna Baszler and Zoey Serrano also participated in the event, marking Baszler's return after 550 days of television inactivity.

Season Trajectory
The TNA Bound For Glory event serves as a major annual milestone in the professional wrestling calendar that frequently features surprise appearances from talent returning from hiatus. This year's edition followed the established pattern of integrating surprise guest entrants into the signature gauntlet match.
The victory for Shayna Baszler and Zoey Serrano signals an immediate shift in the Knockouts World Tag Team division hierarchy following their win over Allie and Kiera Hogan. Additionally, Rehwoldt's return to the broadcast booth suggests his in-ring participation was a one-time event rather than a shift in his primary commentary role.
The takeaway
Surprise appearances at major pay-per-view events often serve to highlight the versatility of veteran performers who have moved into backstage or broadcast roles. Viewers should look for how these one-off competitive spots impact future storylines and talent positioning in the coming weeks.
