Amtrak has officially completed a nine-day infrastructure project at the A interlocking south of Washington Union Station. Normal service for Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express resumed on October 26, 2026.
Why it matters
The project focused on critical infrastructure upgrades designed to improve the long-term reliability of the rail network. This work necessitated temporary service changes for various passenger lines south of Washington, D.C.
Crews replaced eight electric switch machines, two double-slip switches, one diamond crossing, and 215 ties. The project also rehabilitated 350 feet of track and tunnel base while installing 2,500 feet of signal and electrical cable.
The players
Amtrak
The national rail operator provides intercity passenger rail services across the United States.
Virginia Railway Express
The commuter rail service operates between Northern Virginia and Washington, D.C.
The details
The construction involved work on the A interlocking leading to the First Street Tunnel. During the project, Virginia Railway Express services were diverted to L'Enfant station, while several Amtrak routes were canceled or supported by bus bridges.
Timeline
October 16, 2026: The construction project began.
October 19-23, 2026: VRE trains originated and terminated at L'Enfant station.
October 26, 2026: Amtrak project completed and normal service resumed.
November 1, 2026: Walk Bridge project in Norwalk concludes.
November 15, 2026: Portal North Bridge project in New Jersey concludes.
Market Landscape
This project follows a pattern of infrastructure modernization seen across the Northeast Corridor, including similar bridge upgrades in New Jersey and Connecticut. These efforts represent a significant push to stabilize aging rail assets against rising passenger demand.
Commuters on Virginia Railway Express and Amtrak lines should see a return to regular scheduling and terminal operations. Passengers previously affected by bus bridges or service cancellations can resume their standard travel routines.
The takeaway
Travelers should verify their specific train schedules before departing, as infrastructure projects periodically necessitate temporary service adjustments. Maintaining critical rail links helps prevent long-term delays and ensures greater consistency for daily commuters.
