Paramount Misnames Shyamalan in Aang Home-Media Release
A promotional announcement for the animated Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender listed the wrong director, cast and synopsis.
Updated on Nov. 3, 2026 in Animation
Paramount's official home-media announcement for Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender named M. Night Shyamalan as director and listed the cast and synopsis of the 2010 live-action film. The animated film's DVD and Blu-ray editions were released the same day.
Why it matters
The error occurred because two films from the franchise received separate physical releases on the same day, leaving the promotional copy confused about which title was which. Accurate listings matter to buyers choosing between the animated series and the earlier live-action adaptation.
The film holds a 90% Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes across 49 critical reviews and a 99% audience Popcornmeter score. The runtime is 99 minutes, and the 4K UHD Steelbook release is scheduled for February 9, 2027, via Amazon.
The players
Paramount
Paramount is a major American film and television studio that distributes the Avatar Aang animated series and its home-media releases.
M. Night Shyamalan
M. Night Shyamalan is an American filmmaker known for The Sixth Sense and for directing the 2010 live-action adaptation The Last Airbender.
The details
Paramount's promotional copy for the animated film wrongly credited M. Night Shyamalan as director and listed Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis and Jackson Rathbone as cast, along with a synopsis from the 2010 film. The animated film, directed by Lauren Montgomery from a screenplay by Christopher Yost and Tim Hedrick, debuted at the top of the Paramount+ streaming chart after its July 25, 2026 release.
Timeline
July 25, 2026: Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender released via Paramount+.
November 3, 2026: DVD and Blu-ray editions released alongside the misnamed announcement.
February 9, 2027: 4K UHD Steelbook release scheduled via Amazon.
Franchise Context
The animated Avatar Aang revival follows the 2010 live-action adaptation directed by M. Night Shyamalan, whose reception differed sharply from the animated series. The promotional mix-up shows how a franchise with two adaptations can produce confusing home-media marketing.
Buyers choosing a physical copy should check the title and creator credits carefully, since the promotional copy mislabels the animated film. The 4K UHD Steelbook arrives February 9, 2027, through Amazon.
The takeaway
Verify director and cast credits on any home-media listing before purchasing, especially for franchises with both animated and live-action versions. The animated film's critical and audience reception suggests it stands on its own merits.
What happens next
